Sokoto IRS withdraws monthly tax e-filing directive, reaffirms annual compliance
The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service has withdrawn its earlier directive mandating compulsory monthly electronic tax filing, clarifying that only annual tax returns are currently required to be filed electronically in line with the Nigerian Tax Administration Act, 2025.
The clarification was contained in a public notice issued on Thursday in Sokoto and shared with our correspondent by a staff member of the agency, Bilal Muhammad, following widespread reactions to a January 5 circular that announced compulsory monthly e-filing.
According to the agency, the reversal became necessary because “the implementation framework for monthly e-filing is still in progress and has not yet been fully operationalised.”
The notice advised taxpayers to “disregard any reference to compulsory monthly e-filing until further official notice,” while reiterating that annual e-filing remains mandatory and compliant with national tax provisions.
SOIRS described electronic filing as a key component of modern tax administration aimed at improving efficiency and transparency.
“Electronic filing remains a key component of modern tax administration aimed at promoting efficiency, transparency, accuracy and ease of compliance,” the notice stated.
The agency pledged continued service improvement and collaboration to ensure seamless compliance in the coming months.
The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service remains committed to providing continuous support and guidance to all taxpayers to ensure smooth and effective compliance, as we collectively work towards strengthening tax administration and service delivery in the state,” the document added.
