Content creator Asherkine denies viral ‘canteen worker’ video was staged

I may understand that a bunch of people cannot fathom a young adult living and working in Ogun State trying to make a way for themselves because she ‘looks too good’ for such a job,” the influencer wrote Tuesday in a post on X while responding to the backlash.

The video, which has been widely circulated online, features a 21-year-old woman identified as Chiamaka Clare, whom Asherkine said he met while she was working at a canteen in Ogun State.

In the footage, the influencer speaks with the woman after her shift and later invites her to Lagos for a post-Valentine’s outing after she reveals she spent the day working. The video shows her calling her mother to ask for permission before leaving with him.

Clips from the trip show the pair travelling to Lagos, where she was taken shopping and later to dinner. The creator later surprised her with a trip to South Africa, where they were seen enjoying activities such as nightlife outings and a helicopter ride.

However, shortly after the video gained traction online, social media users began questioning its authenticity. Some claimed the interaction appeared scripted and pointed to Clare’s social media presence, alleging her lifestyle did not match the portrayal of a random canteen worker.

Responding to the claims, Asherkine insisted the encounter was genuine and said the video was recorded over several days rather than in a single shoot.

“I understand that most of my videos span through the progression of a day but this video spanned over a week after our first meet,” he wrote, adding that critics were wrongly interpreting the timeline of the footage.

The influencer also noted that the woman has relatives in Lagos, explaining that the trip between the two locations was not unusual.

Asherkine, who has built a large online following through videos showing him surprising strangers with gifts, money and experiences, said criticism would not stop him from producing such content
