Lagos kicks off Obasa Games qualifiers

The qualifiers for the 2025 edition of the Obasa Games among the six educational districts in Lagos State have begun.

The annual sporting event, created in honour of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa, and organised by Kings Sports International, aims at the development of sports in the state.

Previously a football-only competition, this year’s edition includes Boxing, Table Tennis, Chess, Scrabble, Ayo Olopon, Athletics, and Football. It kicked off last Friday at Anwarul Islam College, Agege.

In a Tuesday statement, Kings Sports International said six games — except football — were held on Monday, November 17, at District III, which comprises Lagos Island and Epe.

The statement, signed by the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Moshood Olawale Ajibola, said winners from all six educational districts would converge in Agege for the final round, adding that a total prize sum of N12m is at stake.

“The District Qualification Stage, a precursor to the final competition, which is scheduled for later this month, started on Monday November 17

“The preliminaries will run until next week, with the schedules as follows: District III (Lagos Island to Epe): this Monday, District IV (Surulere) will be held on Tuesday, District II (Ikorodu) is slated for Wednesday, District VI (Oregun) will follow on Thursday, District V (Badagry) will be held on Friday, while District I (Agege/Alimosho) are fixed for coming Monday,” the statement read.

Ajibola stated that the major aims of the Obasa Games are to “develop sports at the grassroots, build character, teach and develop strategic and analytical thinking, leadership skills, goal setting, and risk taking among youths.

The seven sports event will run until December 13, 2025, across two age categories, namely the U-15 and U-18.

 on Sunday report that the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee for Obasa Games 2025, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, who is also the Chairman of Agege Local Government, stated that the multi-sport event is set to empower and provide valuable opportunities for talented youths in sports.

He stated this at the grand opening of Obasa Games 2025 at Anwar-Islam Model College, Oniwaya, Dopemu-Agege, where he stated that the essence of the event is to offer opportunities to talented youths.
