Lagos govt scraps work-from-home initiative for public servants

The work-from-home program for public employees has been formally discontinued by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, marking the end of remote work in the state's civil service.

The new directive, a major policy shift from one now in place, introduced last February 2024 to cushion the effects of hardship on workers in the state, is set to take effect from March 31, 2025, mandating all government employees to fully return to their offices.

The Head of Service, Bode Agoro, made this known in a signed circular titled ‘Cancellation of the work from home initiative in the Lagos State Public Service’, a copy of which was made available to newsmen on Tuesday, saying that the decision followed the implementation of the new minimum wage and other welfare improvements aimed at boosting productivity in the public sector.

“Further to the implementation of the new minimum wage in the state. Public Service and other commendable measures put in place by this
administration to improve the welfare and well-being of public servants in Lagos State, it is hereby notified for general information that Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has approved the cancellation of the work-from-home initiative in the Lagos State Public Service.

“To this end, cancellation of the work-from-home initiative, which had been in place since February 2024, will take effect from 31st March 2025,” he said.

Agoro, therefore, urged civil servants to rededicate themselves to their duties and enhance service delivery across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), even as he equally enjoined accounting officers to note the contents of this circular and give it the service-wide publicity it deserved.

“In view of the above, Public Servants are implored to fully rededicate themselves to effective discharge of their duties and ensure improved service
delivery in their various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAS).

“Accordingly, accounting officers are enjoined to note the contents of this circular and give it the service-wide publicity it deserves,” Agoro said.
