Kaduna declares last Saturday of every month sanitation day
The Kaduna State Government has designated the last Saturday of every month as Statewide Sanitation Day, unveiling a renewed environmental campaign aimed at improving public health, curbing flooding, and tackling sanitation-related risks across the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the government announced that the maiden exercise will hold on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.
The initiative forms part of Governor Uba Sani’s preventive strategy to strengthen environmental safety and promote a cleaner, more resilient Kaduna.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Abubakar Buba, described the decision as a bold and necessary step toward building safer and healthier communities. He called on community leaders, local government councils, civil society organisations, and residents to participate actively.
A clean environment means a safer, healthier Kaduna State. We urge every resident to come out and take part,” Buba said, stressing the need for collective ownership of public spaces.
He explained that sanitation teams and monitoring officers would be deployed across the state during each exercise to ensure effective coordination and high compliance levels, noting that the government is determined to restore a culture of regular cleaning in both urban and rural areas.
Reinforcing the message, the Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said the sanitation day was not simply a waste-disposal activity but a strategic intervention designed to prevent avoidable disasters.
This is more than sweeping streets. It is a strategic, preventive action to stop floods, reduce environmental risks, and protect the well-being of our people,” Maiyaki said.
He noted that with Kaduna’s growing population and expanding urban settlements, poor waste management had become a major trigger for flooding, blocked waterways, pollution, and disease outbreaks. The monthly sanitation exercise, he said, would help address these risks before they escalate.
According to Maiyaki, Governor Uba Sani’s administration is prioritising environmental reforms to complement ongoing infrastructure upgrades, citizen participation initiatives, and public health programmes.
The government urged residents, businesses, market associations, religious groups, and neighbourhood leaders to fully comply with the monthly exercise, emphasizing that community participation remains the backbone of any successful environmental policy.
“The Kaduna State Government calls on all residents to cooperate fully, noting that a cleaner environment is a shared responsibility and a necessary foundation for a healthier, more resilient Kaduna,” the statement added.
The sanitation day reinstates a long-standing practice that had faded in recent years but is now being revived to tackle mounting waste-disposal challenges and strengthen environmental consciousness across the state.
