Don warns new students against drugs, alcohol

The Vice-Chancellor of Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan, Timothy Adejumo, has warned matriculating students of the institution to shun drug abuse, alcohol misuse and other vices or face the music.
Adejumo gave this warning during the 7th matriculation of PCU, held at the university auditorium, Olaogun, Old-Ife Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday.
He urged them to uphold the core values of the university such as scholarship, integrity, diligence, service, honour, alongside discipline, humility, hard work, and an unwavering faith in God.
The VC said, “Today marks a formal induction and the beginning of a transformative academic journey for 146 bright, young minds.
These students step into the world of higher education with dreams to explore, potential to unleash, and destinies to fulfill.
“You are here not by accident, but by divine purpose. Your admission is a testament to your potential and a commitment to a new chapter in your life.
“We have in place robust counselling services to support your well-being and success. I encourage you to avoid vices such as drug abuse, alcohol misuse, and exam malpractice or face the music.
Seek guidance when needed, stay focused, and embrace the opportunities before you with gratitude and responsibility.
To our dedicated faculty and staff, thank you for your commitment to excellence. You are the backbone of this institution. I urge you to continue modelling the virtues we hold, as we build a new generation of leaders grounded in knowledge and godliness.”
He further advised the students to be prepared for school life, saying university life will present challenges- academic pressures, moments of doubt, and the need for resilience.
He added, “What you should know is that each challenge is an opportunity to grow. Lean on your mentors, build lasting friendships, and above all, seek wisdom from above. Let curiosity drive your learning and compassion guide your actions.”
In her lecture titled “Discovering Your Passion: Exploring Interests and Pursuing Dreams,” the guest lecturer, Eyiwumi Olayinka, also charged them to focus on succeeding and making their dreams manifest.
Olayinka, who is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of European Studies at the University of Ibadan, admonished them to lay the foundation for excellence now.
“In essence, your focus should be on succeeding and making your dreams manifest. The education you will receive from this university is a universal one and you must therefore decide to position yourself for that total education.
The best you can do for yourself and the world is to make a successful dream of your course of study. Whether admitted for your chosen course or otherwise, any knowledge you acquire is relevant. That is why we all say, no knowledge is lost. What you make of it is what matters.” she added.
