Army flags fly half-mast to honour 17 slain soldiers

The Nigerian Army on Thursday declared a three-day mourning period, from June 25 to June 27, 2025, in honour of 17 soldiers killed in Niger State.

Apart from those killed, 10 others were injured while repelling attacks on communities and military operating bases in parts of Kaduna and Niger states.

Scores of bandits were also killed in the attacks, which occurred in the Kwanar Dutse, Mairiga, and Boka areas of Niger State, as well as Angwan Turai in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

According to a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt Col Appolonia Anele, the operation was based on credible intelligence which led to troops intercepting about 300 bandits in the Kwanar Dutse Forest.

She noted that the terrorists were said to be attempting a night-time movement towards Kwatankoro Forest, possibly to launch coordinated attacks on nearby communities or escape the ongoing military offensive in Zamfara State.

Anele added that troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle lasting over three hours, disrupting their plans.

“Sequel to the ground engagement by the Nigerian Army troops, the Nigerian Air Force conducted precision airstrikes on the terrorists’ withdrawal routes, delivering accurate heavy bombardments on identified terrorists’ locations.

Although the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained, multiple blood trails along their escape routes presumably indicate significant enemy losses.

“Further operation is ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the damage inflicted on the terrorists,” the statement said.

In a post on X, the Army described the fallen troops as courageous heroes who paid the ultimate price while defending the nation.

As a mark of respect, the service directed all Army formations and units across the country to fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast throughout the mourning period.

It read, “It is with profound respect that the Nigerian Army declares a three-day mourning period, from June 25th to June 27th, 2025, to honour the bravery and sacrifice of 17 courageous soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty at Kwana Dutse Local Government Area, Niger State.

“As a mark of solemn tribute, all Nigerian Army formations and units have been directed to fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast.

“During this period, we pay our deepest respects to these fallen heroes and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones.

Their unwavering dedication, valour, and sacrifice in defence of our nation will forever be remembered and cherished.”
