The latest announcement by the company is seen as a formal confirmation of a sweeping retrenchment exercise.

earlier report that AEDC had commenced a sweeping staff rationalisation exercise as part of an internal restructuring plan.

Although sources within the company confirmed that 800 employees were affected, the exact number of staff laid off was not disclosed by AEDC.

The report revealed that the exercise, which began earlier in the week, formed part of management’s strategy to streamline operations, eliminate redundancies, and boost productivity amid growing operational costs and regulatory pressure to improve service standards.

The mass layoff, which began on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, follows months of internal restructuring at the utility firm.

Multiple sources familiar with the development within the company told our correspondent on Thursday that the management had initially proposed to sack 1,800 workers before reducing the number to 800 after a series of tense negotiations with the National Union of Electricity Employees and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies.

One of the sources, who is an AEDC employee, said the management had initially planned to sack 1,800 workers but reduced the number to 800 after pressure from the unions, which had at first insisted that no employee should be laid off.

AEDC’s management, however, maintained that the restructuring is not merely a downsizing effort but a deliberate step towards achieving a customer-centric and performance-driven culture in line with global best practices.
