Army probes child abuse case in Niger barracks
The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an alleged case of child abuse reported at the Nigerian Army Training Centre in the Kontagora Military Cantonment in Niger State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Godfrey Abakpa, the incident was said to have been reported on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the case came to light after a neighbouring soldier reportedly heard the distress cries of a seven-year-old girl coming from an adjoining apartment.
Upon gaining access to the residence, the soldier allegedly discovered the child being physically assaulted by two sisters identified as her relatives and custodians.
The statement read, “The authority of the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) has commenced investigation into an alleged case of child abuse reported on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, at the Kontagora Military Cantonment.
“The incident came to light after a neighbouring soldier reportedly heard the distress cries of a child emanating from an adjoining apartment. Upon gaining access to the residence, he allegedly discovered a seven-year-old girl being physically assaulted by two sisters who are identified as relatives and custodians of the child.”

Additional information also suggested possible neglect, including denial of meals and restriction from using basic household facilities.
Eyewitness accounts further alleged that similar incidents might have occurred in the past despite previous cautions.

The statement added that the child had been living with her uncle’s family within the cantonment following the death of her father.
She was reportedly brought to the barracks to receive care and continue her education.

Following the report, the Commander of NATRAC, Major General AGL Haruna, directed the NATRAC Military Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Upon receiving the report, the Commander NATRAC, Major General AGL Haruna, immediately directed the NATRAC Military Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement added.
