Singer, Crayon, Mourns Mother’s Death

Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Charles Chukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has announced the death of his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Chukwu.

The Mavins Record artiste disclosed that his mother died on July 4, in an emotional tribute posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday evening.

Describing her as his “rock, backbone, and angel,” Crayon expressed the profound pain of her loss, stating that the day she died was the “darkest” of his life.

He recounted their last conversation, which occurred just days before her passing, noting that she had prayed for him as was her custom at the start of a new month.

I didn’t know that would be your last prayer. You sounded so healthy and like nothing was wrong. Only for my whole world to suddenly crumble right in front of me,” he wrote.

The singer recalled the devastating moment of seeing her lifeless on a hospital bed, a sight he said broke him “to pieces” and was his “greatest fear.”

In a raw outpouring of grief, Crayon questioned the timing of her death, especially as it came just days before his birthday and at a time when the family’s fortunes had improved.

After all the suffer wey we don suffer for decades, na now wey God don bless us, you come die leave me? Wetin come be the need?” he lamented in a mix of English and Pidgin.

He eulogised his late mother as a “warrior” who carried the family’s burden for years and pulled through.

Despite his grief, Crayon promised to be strong, take care of the family, and continue pushing forward as she would have wanted.

“I will never say goodbye because I know you are living through me and you are always with me. Thank you for everything my beautiful mummy. Till we meet again my angel,” he concluded.

He confirmed that Mrs. Chukwu has been laid to rest.
