Ramadan, Lent: Oluwafemi Akinlawon Urges Unity, Compassion Among Faithful in Ogun State

A young politician in Ogun State and aspirant for the State House of Assembly Isokan State Constituency, Oluwafemi Akinlawon, has extended a message of unity, peace, and renewed commitment to service as Muslims begin Ramadan and Christians commence the Lenten season.

In a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday, Akinlawon described the coincidence of the two sacred seasons as a “divine reminder” that beyond religious differences, the people of Ogun State share common values of sacrifice, love, and humanity.

He called on adherents of both faiths to use the period of fasting and reflection to pray for the peace and progress of the state, while also reaching out to the less privileged.

The Assembly hopeful stressed that fasting should go beyond abstaining from food, noting that true devotion is reflected in service to humanity and peaceful coexistence.

“Ramadan and Lent are not just religious rituals; they are sacred seasons that teach us discipline, sacrifice, forgiveness, and compassion.

‘At a time when our society faces economic and social challenges, we must draw strength from these spiritual exercises to build bridges of understanding and love. I urge Muslims and Christians across Ogun State to see this period as an opportunity to heal divisions, uplift the weak, and recommit themselves to the values that bind us together as one people,” he said.

“It is not enough to fast from dawn till dusk or to abstain from certain pleasures. The essence of these seasons is transformation. We must fast from hatred, from injustice, from corruption, and from indifference to the suffering of others.

Let this season inspire us to be kinder in our homes, more honest in our dealings, and more committed to the development of our communities. Ogun State can only move forward when we place humanity above hostility.”

Akinlawon further emphasized the need for political leaders and aspirants to embrace issue-based engagements and avoid actions that could inflame religious or ethnic tensions.

“As leaders and aspiring leaders, we carry a greater responsibility. Our words must unite, not divide. Our actions must inspire hope, not fear. Ramadan and Lent remind us that leadership is service.

“It is about sacrifice for the common good. I pledge to continue promoting policies and conversations that foster inclusion, fairness, and opportunities for all, regardless of faith or background,” he added.
