Police nab two suspects over culpable homicide in Abuja community

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a case of culpable homicide in the Byazhin area of Abuja.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this on Monday, stating that the suspects allegedly attacked a teenager, leading to his death after a violent confrontation.

According to her, on February 12, 2026, at about 11:45 p.m., the Byazhin Divisional Headquarters received a distress call reporting that one Chidera Benjamin, 16, of Byazhin Across, had allegedly inflicted a severe machete injury on his mother during a domestic dispute.

Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two neighbours, Cosmos Okafor, 31, and Okechukwu Wisdom, 17, allegedly attacked Chidera in reaction to the incident.

Further findings indicated that the confrontation stemmed from allegations that Chidera had been transferring funds from his mother’s bank account into his personal Opay account without her consent. When his mother confronted him over the unauthorised transactions, he reportedly became violent and attacked her with a machete, causing serious injury to her hand.

The two neighbours who witnessed the altercation allegedly attacked Chidera for assaulting his mother. During the confrontation, he sustained severe injuries and became unconscious.

He was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a medical team.

The suspects were promptly arrested by police.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Miller G. Dantawaye, while commiserating with the family, urged residents to adopt peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, warning that actions taken in anger can result in tragic and irreversible consequences.

He added that the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The command also urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious persons or activities through its emergency lines.
