Police arrest man for motorcycle theft in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended an individual in connection with an attempted culpable homicide and the theft of a motorcycle in the Sabon Layi area of the state metropolis.

As disclosed in a press release issued on Friday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, on Sunday the Command received information regarding two individuals confronted by irate youth in Sabon Layi.

The statement revealed that the command dispatched a team of detectives to the scene, arresting Jibrin Iliya, a 40-year-old male who faces charges of attempted culpable homicide and motorcycle theft.

According to the PPRO, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect and an accomplice conspired to board a commercial motorcycle with malicious intent.

During transit, they directed the motorcyclist, Sa’adu Manniru, a 30-year-old male resident of Kofar Wambai Bauchi, to a predetermined location. When Manniru halted to receive payment, the suspects allegedly attacked him with an axe, striking him on the head. The victim’s shouts drew the attention of bystanders, who responded collectively and pursued the assailants until the police arrived. The suspects were in the process of fleeing with Manniru’s Bajaj motorcycle, registration number KTG 129 UV.”

Wakil noted that during interrogation, the suspect admitted to a three-year collaboration with an accomplice named Lauwali, a male from the Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, specifically to steal motorcycles.

He said “Iliya acknowledged their involvement in the theft of three motorcycles from various locations, including Bauchi and Gombe.

The stolen motorcycles were reportedly sold to a buyer in Gombe State. Iliya indicated that he had personally profited from these thefts, having received payments of N30,000 and N20,000 on different occasions.”

The command stated that investigation efforts are ongoing and upon conclusion, the suspect will be profiled and subsequently charged to court.
