Oyo lawmaker demands stronger action against illegal mining

A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Anthony Ogunsola, has called for more decisive executive intervention while citing escalating security threats and exploitation linked to unregulated mining in the State.

During a House session on Tuesday, Ogunsola, representing Iwajowa Constituency, presented a report detailing how illegal mining fuels banditry, kidnapping, and environmental degradation in host communities.

Ogunsola, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, emphasised that many current challenges stem from the infiltration of unknown individuals into communities, leading to increased insecurity, kidnapping, robbery, and other social vices.

While acknowledging the constitutional oversight of mining and Governor Seyi Makinde’s existing efforts, including Executive Order No. 001 of 2023, Ogunsola expressed alarm over the minimal compliance.

It was revealed that little progress had been recorded on the level of compliance by Mineral title holders…only thirteen (13) miners officially registered with the Agency,” the report stated.

He emphasised that this non-compliance “is constituting security threats and challenges within the State especially the mining communities.”

Ogunsola highlighted instances like the protest in Itasa against a firm for alleged illegal exploration.

He also criticised the alleged inaction of the State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee and a lack of synergy among relevant agencies.

“There is a need for the executive arm of government to take more proactive and decisive steps to curb unregulated mining operations in the state that posed security threats and illegal and unpatriotic miners that exploit host/mining communities,” Hon. Ogunsola asserted.

He urged increased logistical support for the enforcement task force, better inter-agency collaboration, and public awareness campaigns for mining communities.

The lawmaker also moved for an audit of mineral title holders and site inspections to ensure compliance.

Ogunsola’s call underscores the pressing need for a more robust executive response to combat illegal mining and its detrimental impact on security and communities in Oyo State.
