ONSA denies alleged procurement of toxic chemicals from Poland

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has denied claims that it recently procured the highly toxic substance, thallium sulphate, from Poland, describing the allegations as false.

The denial follows a disclosure on X by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, who claimed that information available to opposition political leaders suggested ONSA imported about 10 kilograms of the chemical.

El-Rufai said he had formally written to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, seeking clarification on the alleged transaction.

In his letter, he described thallium compounds as extremely hazardous, odourless, and colourless, and raised concerns about public safety and transparency.

He requested details on the purpose of the chemical, intended end-user, supplier, authorisation, quantity, concentration, storage arrangements, and the involvement of regulatory agencies such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

A senior ONSA official, when contacted for comment, said the allegations are false, dismissing any claims that the agency had procured the dangerous substance.
