One killed, six injured in lone commercial bus crash in Lagos
One person has been confirmed dead while six others sustained injuries in a lone commercial bus accident along the Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway in Lagos on Saturday evening.
The incident occurred at New Castle Bus Stop inward Gbagada when a commercial Volkswagen bus, popularly known as a danfo, with registration number LSD 654 XY, reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a roadside culvert.
The impact of the crash forcefully ejected a female passenger from the vehicle onto the expressway, while six other occupants sustained serious injuries, including multiple fractures.
In a tragic turn of events, an oncoming articulated trailer was unable to stop in time and ran over the passenger who had fallen on the roadway, resulting in her immediate death.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene and activated emergency traffic control measures to prevent further accidents and restore order along the busy corridor.
LASTMA operatives temporarily cordoned off the section of the expressway to enable the evacuation of the deceased, the injured victims, and the wreckage of the commercial bus.
The driver of the articulated trailer reportedly fled the scene after the incident.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Pedro Police Division also arrived to provide security support and maintain order during the rescue operation.
Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) evacuated the six injured victims, including the bus driver who reportedly suffered a fractured leg, to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Similarly, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) removed the remains of the deceased from the accident scene.
Following the evacuation exercise, LASTMA officials cleared the wreckage and other obstructions from the road, after which normal vehicular movement was restored along the expressway.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s commitment to continuous public enlightenment on road safety across the state.
He urged vehicle owners and commercial transport operators to ensure their vehicles are in proper mechanical condition, especially the braking system, before embarking on any journey.
According to him, strict adherence to routine vehicle maintenance remains a critical step in preventing avoidable road accidents and safeguarding lives on the highways
