Obi: Why I can’t be Atiku’s running mate in 2027

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he is not willing to serve as anyone’s running mate in the 2027 general election.

Obi made the statement on Sunday night during an X Spaces conversation, where he responded to questions about his political future and leadership ambitions.

His remarks come amid growing pressure from some political stakeholders urging him to consider a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to challenge incumbent President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The calls intensified following the recent alliance formed by opposition leaders under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In recent weeks, reports had circulated that Atiku had approached Obi to run with him on a joint ticket, with claims that Obi had agreed and was planning to defect to the ADC alongside his supporters in the South-East.

However, the former Anambra State governor firmly dismissed such speculation, stressing that he would not serve as a running mate to anyone.

According to Obi, his years of experience and preparation for leadership go beyond the office of vice president.

“I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice President,” Obi said.

“I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President.

Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers.”

Meanwhile, Dele Momodu, a close ally of Atiku told the media last week that the former vice president may explore other options if Obi declines a joint ticket.

Momodu added that Atiku could consider working with other political figures, including former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, ahead of the 2027 election.
