Nursing council inducts 19 graduates in Edo

The Nursing and Medical Council of Nigeria, on Tuesday, inducted 19 graduates of Wellspring University, Edo State, into the profession.
At the first oath-taking/induction at the university campus, the Chief Executive Officer/Registrar of the council, Ndagi Alhassan, said that with the ceremony, the graduands had become professional nurses who must strive for excellence in their chosen profession.
He urged them to learn from their senior colleagues and ensure they minimised the incidents of error as their patients relied on them for quality treatment.
Alhassan, who was represented by a member of the Department of Planning, Research and Statistics of the NMCN, Ali Gorini, admonished the new nurses to adhere to the rules of professional conduct binding on every nurse in Nigeria.
He said: “The essence of this ceremony is to celebrate your transition from being students to graduates and registered nurses.
This occasion should also revitalise, reminding you of your fundamental responsibilities as nurses. It marks the beginning of their career as nurses.
“Nursing is a highly demanding profession that requires compassion, kindness, and attentiveness in dealing with patients.”
The Dean, Faculty of Nursing Science, Prof Ngozi Osunde, described the ceremony as memorable and a paradigm shift for the new nurses.
She enjoined the inductees to always remember that the profession remained dynamic and evolving, hence they must be abreast with the new trends.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Isaac Ajayi, described the inductees as the trailblazers and the first fruit of the nursing programme at Wellspring University.
He noted that their success would be remembered as a fundamental chapter in the history of the school.
He also commended the parents and the governing council and invited the public to the 13th convocation ceremony of the institution on Friday.
Prof Fidelis Okafor, who delivered the induction lecture, traced the history of the profession in the country and noted that nursing had become widely acceptable among young people.
