Benin Unity Cup: Egor LG shines on opening weekend
Egor Local Government emerged as the standout team on the opening weekend of the Benin Unity Cup, which kicked off on Friday.
Egor LG defeated Uhunmwode LG 5–1 in the opening match, watched by the sponsor, Senator Neda Imasuen, and other dignitaries at the Crescent FC Sports Complex, Irhirhi, Benin City.
In another tightly contested fixture, Orhiomwon LG and Oredo 2 played out a 1–1 draw.
Meanwhile, Oredo 1 were awarded a walkover victory after Ovia South-West LG failed to show up for their scheduled game.
Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, said football had become a global industry and emphasised that Edo State holds untapped potential capable of reaching elite levels.
He commended the teams’ performances and urged them to abide by the rules of the competition.
He added, “Football has become a global industry and Edo State possesses untapped potential capable of reaching elite levels. I implore the teams to adhere strictly to the rules of the game.”
The competition continues on Monday.
