Nasarawa man nabbed for selling fake currency
The Nigeria Police Force, Nasarawa State Command, has arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for allegedly trading in counterfeit currency.
Hassan, a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was arrested by detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia following credible intelligence.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday.
Nansel said the suspect was apprehended at a cattle market in Lafia while allegedly circulating fake N1,000 notes.
According to the statement, Hassan confessed to receiving the counterfeit notes from an accomplice in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia, who is currently at large, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, urged residents to remain alert during cash transactions and report suspicious activities.
“Members of the public, especially traders, POS operators, fuel station attendants and motor park workers, must be vigilant. They should carefully examine currency notes and report anyone suspected of circulating fake money to the nearest police station,” he said.
He advised citizens to look out for features such as poor print quality, duplicated serial numbers, smaller note sizes and missing security elements.
