Lawmaker calls for calm after elephants killed one in Ogun community

A member representing Ijebu East in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Waliu Ifedolapo, on Tuesday, called on residents to maintain calm over the killing of a 50-year-old farmer, Musa Kalamu by a herd of elephants.
earlier report that a 50-year-old farmer, Kalamu, died on Monday following a fatal attack by six elephants in the Itasin community, located in the Ogbere area of Ogun State.
The development has triggered outrage in the community where human-animal conflicts have been recorded many times.
Reacting to the incident in a statement on Tuesday, Ifedolapo expressed regret over the tragic death and described it as unfortunate.
Ifedolapo also called for calm among residents, acknowledging the fear and anger that such an unusual and tragic event can provoke.
The lawmaker who described the incident as deeply unfortunate and shocking, commiserated with the family of the deceased.
“While we understand the pain and confusion this incident has caused, we urge our people to remain calm.
The government is being engaged to take swift and lasting action,” he said.
Ifedolapo further urged the Ogun State Government and relevant wildlife and environmental agencies to take immediate steps to investigate the cause of the incident and implement preventive measures to forestall a recurrence.
The lawmaker advocated for the immediate implementation of a conservationist development plan in the area to manage human-wildlife boundaries and ensure the safety of lives and property, while preserving ecological balance.
“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between conservation agencies, local authorities, and the state government.
“Our communities should not live in fear of wildlife attacks.
“We must strike a balance between conservation and safety,” he added.
Ifedolapo reaffirmed his commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure effective solutions are deployed and that such an incident never repeats itself.
The lawmaker also promised that the matter would be discussed on the floor of the House as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to the incident.
