IG pushes Ogun police academy, 42 colleges accreditation
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Monday held a strategic meeting with officials of the Federal Ministry of Education on plans to establish a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Ogun State and upgrade 42 police colleges nationwide.
A statement by the Force spokesman, Anthony Placid, said the meeting, held on May 4, 2026, was hosted by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad.
“Disu held a high-level strategic meeting at the Federal Ministry of Education today, Monday, May 4, 2026.
“The main goal of the meeting was to officially establish a new Nigeria Police Academy campus in Ogun State, along with a comprehensive plan to upgrade and secure accreditation for the 42 police colleges nationwide,” the statement read.
Placid said a former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other stakeholders also attended.
He said discussions focused on the proposed establishment of the Ogun State campus and plans to upgrade and secure accreditation for police colleges across the country
According to him, part of the plan included collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for infrastructure development, as well as engagement with the National Universities Commission for resource verification and accreditation processes
Stakeholders also coordinated with the National Universities Commission for thorough resource verification to meet accreditation standards, with a clear timeline set for the Ogun State campus to be fully operational in the 2026 academic session,” he said.
The IGP promised to strengthen police education and improve training standards, noting that the reform would combine academic and operational training to prepare officers for current security demands.
“IGP Disu reaffirmed the Force’s dedication to professional excellence, emphasising that transforming these institutions is essential for building a modern, service-oriented police force.
“He stated that by combining academic rigour with tactical operational training, the Nigeria Police Force will produce officers ready to address today’s security challenges with the highest level of integrity,” he said.
