Lagos pupils compete in inter-school challenge

Pupils from various public primary schools across Lagos West gathered at the Methodist Primary School Hall, Oshodi, to compete in the second stage of the Sweet Thinkers Top 200 Academic Excellence Competition.
The contest, which tested participants in Mathematics, English Language, and General Knowledge, is part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting academic excellence and rekindling interest in quality education among young learners.
The organisers noted that the initiative, which aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), was part of an ongoing effort to improve academic outcomes among public school pupils.
The first stage of the competition, held earlier in July, had over 2,000 students from 20 local government areas present for the academic excellence scholarship initiative.
Speaking, a teacher from Mafoluku Primary School, Oshodi, Elizabeth Adesina, lauded the initiative for motivating pupils to study beyond the classroom.
“This platform has really helped our pupils grow a lot. It has brought out something in them that even they didn’t know was there, she said.
A representative of Sweet Thinkers, Fumilayo Akinshola, said the competition reignited hope in education among both pupils and teachers.
The journey has been good. The enthusiasm we’ve seen from pupils is encouraging. They look forward to the exams with pride,” she said.
One of the participants, Oluwadarasimi Alimi, from Central Primary School, Oshodi, expressed excitement after qualifying for the next stage.
“Although it was hard, I did my best and I feel very happy to move to the next round. I’ll study more because this will prepare me for the future,” he said.
The PUNCH observed that Sweet Thinkers maintained fairness in the process by ensuring no school had prior knowledge of the question areas, compelling all participants to rely on their overall preparation.
The competition continues across Lagos Island and Maryland zones, with 20 finalists from each zone expected to compete in the third phase and then the grand finale, which will be hosted early next year.
