Kebbi-sponsored medical students arrive Ethiopia, begin academic journey

The 35 medical students sponsored by the Kebbi State Government have arrived safely in Ethiopia to commence their studies at Premium Medical College, Addis Ababa.

The students, who were earlier bidden farewell in Birnin Kebbi by Governor Nasir Idris, were said to have arrived in high spirits and good health, ready to begin their academic programme.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, said the students were warmly received on arrival by the state government officials who immediately settled them into their comfortable accommodation prearranged ahead of their trip.

“They were received in a very cordial atmosphere and provided with refreshments. Adequate accommodation has also been secured to ensure a conducive environment for learning,” Sarki stated.

He added that officials of the Kebbi State Ministry are currently in Addis Ababa to supervise their orientation and ensure a seamless transition into academic activities.

“Our officials are on the ground to provide all necessary support, facilitate their documentation, and ensure they begin lectures without delay,” he said.

The foreign scholarship initiative is part of the Kebbi State Government’s broader strategy to address gaps in the health sector by investing in the training of young indigenes in critical medical fields.

Governor Idris had, during a farewell ceremony prior to their departure, urged the students to be good ambassadors of the state and Nigeria at large.

“This opportunity is a privilege and a responsibility. You must remain focused, disciplined, and committed to excellence.

“Kebbi State is investing in you because we believe you will return to serve your people,” the governor was quoted as saying.

reports that the Idris’ administration has consistently emphasised human capital development as a cornerstone of its agenda, particularly in education and healthcare, with the aim of strengthening service delivery and reducing dependence on external manpower.

Reaffirming this commitment, Sarki said, “The government remains unwavering in its resolve to provide quality education and international exposure for our youths. This programme is a long-term investment in the future of Kebbi State.”

The students are expected to commence lectures after completing the orientation and registration processes at the institution.
