FCTA releases WhatsApp hotlines for reporting uncleared refuse in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has released four telephone numbers for residents to report cases of uncleared refuse across the FCT, as part of efforts to tackle the city’s worsening waste management challenges.

The numbers, which are accessible via WhatsApp, are intended to enable residents submit pictures and videos of refuse that has not been evacuated by waste management contractors.

Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday, urging residents to actively participate in monitoring sanitation services within their communities.

“The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has made four telephone numbers available to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to report uncleared refuse.

This is aimed at addressing the growing waste problem in the FCT by ensuring that waste management contractors do their jobs as due,” the statement partly read.

The development comes a month after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, signed new waste management contracts with 54 new contractors following the expiration of the previous contracts in April 2025.

Addressing the contractors during an interactive meeting on the 14th of November, 2025, Wike announced that a task force had been set up to monitor the contractors’ activities, warning that failure to deliver would result in the termination of their contract.

Management of waste is a very difficult job. So, I want to plead with you to see that you are carrying out an assignment for the development of our capital city.

“So please help us to keep the city clean. It’s a job that you applied for; nobody forced you. I assure you that your payment is not a problem. Do the job as required and do it very well. There will be no favouritism. Your job is what will speak for you, and you must get the job done, the minister said.

In his statement, Olayinka said residents should clearly indicate the location where the images or videos of unclear refuse were taken to help authorities identify the contractors responsible for the affected areas.
