EPL: Newcastle seal £55m deal for Yoane Wissa
Newcastle United have reached an agreement to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa in a deal worth up to £55 million.
The package includes an initial fee of £50m, with a further £5m in performance-based add-ons. The DR Congo international is now en route to Tyneside to complete the formalities of his transfer.
According to BBC Sports on Monday, the move comes just a day after Wissa publicly urged Brentford to “keep their word” and allow him to leave, following weeks of stalled negotiations.
Newcastle had seen two previous bids rejected before finally striking a breakthrough ahead of the transfer deadline.
It comes after Liverpool agreed a British transfer record fee of £125m to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe is desperate to strengthen his forward line, despite completing the club record signing of striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart on a six-year contract last week.
In a statement on Instagram, Wissa said: “I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window, I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford.
“I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer.”
Brentford and Newcastle reopened talks on Monday in an attempt to conclude a deal before the 19:00 BST deadline.
The Bees sold forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United for an initial £65m earlier in the window.
Goalkeeper Mark Flekken has also left to join Bayer Leverkusen for £8m, while midfielder Christian Norgaard moved to Arsenal in a £15m deal.
Last month, Brentford completed a club record deal of up to £42.5m for forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.
Jorgen Strang Larsen, another Newcastle target, is expected to remain at Wolves.
The Magpies were an attractive option for the Norway striker, but Wolves held firm, rejecting bids of £50m and £55m.
Vitor Pereira’s side have lost their opening three Premier League games but are due to complete the £24m signing of Genk striker Tolu Arokodare as support for Strand Larsen, who scored 14 times in the top flight last season.
