Military releases video of Oyo pupils, teachers’ rescue operation

The Defence Headquarters has released a video showing how security operatives rescued the pupils and teachers abducted from Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State after more than 50 days in captivity.

The video, shared on the Defence Headquarters’ official X handle on Sunday, highlighted the operation that led to the victims’ safe rescue.

The military said the operation was made possible through intelligence-led efforts and collaboration among security agencies.

“Through effective inter-agency collaboration and intelligence-driven operations, the abducted victims in Oyo State were safely rescued. The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain steadfast in safeguarding lives and national security,” the Defence Headquarters said.

Online reports that the victims were kidnapped by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026, before regaining their freedom last Friday in a rescue operation carried out by security agencies.

The Presidency had earlier disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation, while several others were neutralised.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the suspects are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services for further investigation.

President Bola Tinubu also revealed that the Ansaru terrorist group was responsible for the abduction of the pupils and teachers.

In a statement issued after the rescue, the President expressed gratitude over the victims’ safe return and commended the security agencies for what he described as their courage, discipline and professionalism.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling terrorism and other security threats, declaring that Nigeria would not surrender to terrorists and would continue to protect lives and property across the country.
