A’Ibom man nabbed for bribing police to free suspected robber

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Emmanuel Peter for attempting to bribe a police officer with N800,000 to secure the release of an armed robbery suspect and suppress the investigation.

The command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Friday.

According to John, the officer in charge of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit, Ebong Thompson, rejected the bribe brought to his office on July 30, 2025.

John said the main suspect, identified as 53-year-old David Samuel Isaac, was arrested after a Samsung phone, reportedly obtained at gunpoint, was traced to him.

He alleged that Isaac had a record of similar offences, having previously been arrested and charged to court for related crimes last year. He was said to have returned to criminal activities after his release.

The police spokesperson said the second suspect, Peter, was arrested and taken into custody after he allegedly delivered the bribe money to the SWAT office to secure Isaac’s release.

“All officers concerned with this discreet investigation received a commendation letter from the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare,” the statement added

The CP, while addressing officers during the end-of-month briefing, urged them to emulate the integrity of the officers involved.

“Members of the public are therefore warned to desist from compromising police investigation,” the statement concluded
