2027: Labour Party begins leadership recruitment, launches e-registration portal
ABUJA — The Senator Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has commenced a leadership recruitment process with the launch of an electronic membership registration exercise ahead of future elections.
Usman, who addressed journalists alongside stakeholders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during the unveiling in Abuja on Monday, urged Nigerians to take advantage of the exercise to formally identify with the party.
The interim national chairman explained that the registration drive is designed to lay the groundwork for elective congresses that will produce party executives at the ward, state, and zonal levels, after which a national convention will be held to elect members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
Earlier, a foundation member of the party, Comrade Lawson Osagie, dismissed claims of factionalisation within the party, insisting that all party organs are operating in line with the Supreme Court judgment and the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the party’s National Caretaker Committee is responsible for overseeing the electoral process and establishing a credible and verifiable membership register.
“We don’t have any problems in the Labour Party in any of our states. The Supreme Court judgment made it clear that the tenure of the previous leadership had expired. One of the key responsibilities of the interim leadership is to conduct congresses and a national convention,” Osagie said.
Speaking on the new online registration portal, Usman described it as simple and convenient, allowing Nigerians both at home and abroad to register as party members without visiting physical offices.
“The portal has been fully tested and earlier technical issues resolved. Members can register from anywhere and download their membership cards,” she said.
She added that the registration is free of charge, warning that any platform demanding payment should be considered fraudulent.
Usman said registrants would be required to select their home states to ensure accurate and verifiable membership records.
She reaffirmed the party’s commitment to rebuilding a stronger political platform while learning from lessons of the 2023 general elections, including the need for reliable polling agents and verifiable records in every polling unit.
According to her, the party aims to deepen grassroots participation by ensuring that members and labour unions actively take part in its electoral processes.
Usman urged members and supporters to register online promptly to help build a credible and participatory party structure ahead of upcoming elections.
