Workers’ Day: Labour remains foundation of great society, says Anambra First Lady

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has extended her goodwill message to Nigerian workers, saying labour reflects the foundation of every great society, and that workers across all sectors—from agriculture to technology—remain central to economic growth and national development.

In a Workers’ Day statement issued on Friday, Soludo said the 2026 celebration presents “a fresh momentum” and a renewed commitment from government, employers and citizens to ensure that those who work are protected, respected and rewarded.

The Anambra First Lady, who is also the founder of the Non-Governmental Organisation, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, described workers as the “truest heroes” and urged relevant authorities to reflect deeply on their welfare and conditions of service.

Emphasising the importance of human capital, she said, “To every hand that has ever held a tool, carried a load, typed through the night, swept a floor, nursed a patient, taught a child, or built something greater than themselves, today belongs to you.”

Reaffirming her solidarity with Nigerian workers, Soludo said workers should see themselves as the backbone of national progress, whose sacrifices deserve to be honoured not only on Workers’ Day but every day.

She said, “Labour is the foundation of every great society. Behind every road, every school, every harvest, every institution stands the tireless dignity of the Nigerian worker.

“You are not invisible. You are the backbone of our progress, and your sacrifices deserve to be honoured and celebrated, not just today, but every day. You are the world’s truest heroes.

As we enter a new month, let May carry fresh momentum; a renewal of commitment from government, employers and citizens alike to ensure that those who work are protected, respected and rewarded.

“To the workers of Anambra State and Nigeria at large, we see, celebrate and honour you. Happy May Day and Happy New Month!”
