Tragedy Strikes: Three Arrested Over Electrocution of 23-Year-Old Apprentice
A devastating incident occurred at a welding workshop in the Asimolowo area of Ifo, Ogun State, resulting in the electrocution of 23-year-old apprentice Jonathan Emmanuel.
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the tragic event: Oladokun Johnson, a welder; Azeez Salami, a truck driver; and Olaleye Kamaldeen, the truck owner.
According to reports, Jonathan Emmanuel’s father, Mr. Abah Emmanuel, notified the Ifo Divisional Police Headquarters about the incident on Thursday, March 6, 2024, at approximately 6 pm.
He had received information from Salami, the truck driver and Jonathan’s master, about the electrocution.
The police swiftly responded to the report, dispatching officers to the scene to assist in evacuating the victim to the General Hospital.
Unfortunately, the doctor on duty confirmed that Jonathan Emmanuel was brought in dead.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Oladokun Johnson, the welder, was working on a container at his workshop using a welding machine with an exposed live wire.
This negligence created a hazardous environment that ultimately led to the tragic incident.
At the time of the incident, Olaleye Kamaldeen, the truck owner, had arrived with a minibus carrying about ten truck rims for offloading.
As Azeez Salami, the truck driver, Olaleye Kamaldeen, and Jonathan Emmanuel were rolling the rims towards the truck, one of the rims came into contact with the exposed wire, resulting in Jonathan’s immediate electrocution.
The police have recovered the welding machine and exposed wire as exhibits. The welder, truck owner, and driver have been arrested and are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The case will be transferred to the SCID for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Ogun State Police Command has strongly advised business owners and artisans to prioritize workplace safety measures to prevent such tragic and avoidable incidents.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring a safe working environment.
The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The community is also being encouraged to report any concerns or hazards in their workplaces to prevent similar tragedies.
As the investigation unfolds, the Ogun State Police Command is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that those responsible for Jonathan Emmanuel’s electrocution are held accountable.
