Sokoto suspends primary health care boss, names acting replacement

The Sokoto State Government has suspended the Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Larai Aliyu Tambuwal.

Her suspension, approved by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, was conveyed in a letter dated October 2, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Ibrahim Haliru Dingyadi, on behalf of the Commissioner for Health.

“Dr Bilyaminu Sifawa will take over her office with immediate effect as Acting Executive Secretary of the agency,” the letter stated.

The letter, addressed to the Special Adviser on State Primary Health Care Development Agency, further noted that the governor’s approval was attached for official perusal and implementation.

The reason for Tambuwal’s suspension was not immediately stated in the correspondence, but the development marks a significant change in the leadership of the state’s primary health care sector.

The State Primary Health Care Development Agency plays a crucial role in strengthening health systems, particularly in rural areas, and ensuring access to quality health services for residents of Sokoto State.

Observers say the leadership transition could have far-reaching implications for ongoing primary health care initiatives in the state.
