Sokoto gov promises quick completion of four motor parks
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has pledged the speedy completion and operation of four motor parks currently under construction across the state, as part of efforts to decongest transport hubs and improve safety.
The governor gave the assurance on Thursday during a visit to victims of a recent fire outbreak at the Sokoto Central Motor Park, where goods and property were destroyed.
He said the incident underscored the urgent need to expand transport infrastructure, noting that existing facilities were becoming overstretched due to population growth and rising commercial activity.
“Our motor parks are gradually becoming congested due to population growth, hence the need to decongest them,” Aliyu said, adding that the state government initiated the construction of four new parks across different parts of the metropolis.
He disclosed that the projects were at advanced stages and would soon be ready for operation, a development expected to ease pressure on the central motor park and improve traffic management in the state capital.
During the visit, the governor sympathised with traders and transport operators affected by the fire incident, assuring them of government support to help them recover and rebuild their businesses.
“We will not leave you alone in this difficult time. Government will support you to recover and continue your businesses,” he said.
Aliyu also urged residents to observe strict safety precautions, particularly in handling flammable materials, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He called on the public to remain vigilant and safety-conscious, expressing hope that such disasters would not reoccur.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Tsoho, confirmed that no lives were lost in the fire incident, though it resulted in significant material damage.
The Sokoto Central Motor Park remains one of the busiest transport hubs in the state, with recurring concerns over congestion driving government plans for expansion and improved safety management.
