Ramadan 06: Be disciplined, avoid lying, vain talk, backbiting, abuse

One of the greatest threats to the reward of fasting is the misuse of the tongue. In Ramadan, Allah does not only command us to restrain our stomachs, but also to discipline our speech. Lies, vain talk, backbiting, and abusive words can silently drain the reward of fasting while a person remains unaware.

Allah warns clearly: “Not a word does he utter except that there is an observer ready to record it.” (Qur’an 50:18).

Lying contradicts the essence of fasting, which is sincerity and truthfulness. The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) cautioned: “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of him leaving his food and drink.” (Bukhari).

This Hadith reminds us that hunger alone does not earn Allah’s pleasure if the tongue remains corrupt.

Vain and useless talk, though sometimes harmless in appearance, wastes precious Ramadan moments meant for remembrance and reflection. Allah describes successful believers as those: “Who turn away from vain speech.” (Qur’an 23:3).

Backbiting is even more severe. Allah compares it to a horrifying act: “Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it.” (Qur’an 49:12).

Yet many fasting tongues engage in gossip — at home, at work, online, and even around iftar tables — forgetting that fasting does not excuse sinful speech.

Abusive language, insults, and mockery also oppose the spirit of Ramadan. The Prophet (s.a.w) said: “The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand others are safe.” (Bukhari and Muslim).

As a guide, fasting Muslims should consciously reduce talking, avoid arguments, exit gossip-filled gatherings, and replace idle speech with dhikr, du‘a, or silence. Before speaking, ask: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?

Ramadan is a training ground for tongue control. Whoever protects his speech protects his fast — and whoever guards his tongue in Ramadan safeguards his reward in the Hereafter. May Allah purify our tongues and accept our fasting. Ameen.
