Police arrest 286 criminal suspects in Ondo, recover 75 exhibits

The Nigeria Police Force, Ondo State Command, says it arrested 286 suspects for various criminal offences across the state between January and March 2026.

The command also disclosed that 75 exhibits were recovered from the suspects within the period under review.

The suspects were allegedly involved in crimes including kidnapping, murder, armed robbery, rape, cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Adebowale Lawal, disclosed this on Friday at the command’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

According to the police boss, the arrests were achieved through intelligence-led operations, sustained patrols, coordinated tactical deployments and strong community collaboration across the state.

He said, “From January 1 to date, the command has arrested a total of 286 suspects for various offences. These include 30 for kidnapping, 10 for murder and homicide, 15 for unlawful possession of firearms, 17 for armed robbery, five for rape and defilement, 41 for cult-related offences, and 168 for other crimes. We also rescued eight kidnap victims during the period.

“We have intensified intelligence-driven policing and proactive strategies to ensure that criminal networks are disrupted and those involved are brought to justice.”

Following the recent abduction of church worshippers during a vigil, Lawal reiterated the command’s directive suspending night religious activities for security reasons.

“We sent a signal to all Area Commanders advising religious leaders — Muslim, Christian and traditional worshippers — to suspend night worship for now because of the security challenges. During the daytime, it is easier for us to monitor activities.

“We told them that if they want to do anything, they should carry us along so we can give expert advice on whether it is safe for their congregation. In the recent case, nobody informed us about any activity taking place there. I do not know when a church became a maternity home or hospital. If someone is pregnant, the best place should be a hospital or maternity home.”

The commissioner urged residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance the fight against crime.

“My advice to the public is simple: when there is insecurity, provide timely information to security agencies. We cannot do it alone. With cooperation and credible intelligence from the public, we can effectively tackle these challenges,” he said.
