Police arrest 18-year-old over defilement of minor in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old man, Basit Tijani, from Ilero, for allegedly defiling a 17-year-old girl.

According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the arrest followed a report made to the police about the incident, which allegedly occurred when the suspect lured the victim into his home and engaged in unlawful sexual activity without her consent.

He said, upon receiving the report, officers from the Ilero Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly, securing the area and rescuing the victim. She was subsequently taken to a medical facility for a comprehensive examination and psychosocial support.

Ayanlade disclosed that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident and has reportedly confessed to the crime while cooperating with investigators.

He said following the initial investigation, the case has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Gender Desk for further inquiry.

“Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, has stated that the suspect will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.”

“The police command has reiterated its commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence, emphasising that offenders will face stringent legal action.”

He further said authorities have urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
