Police arraign father, four others over rape, sexual offences in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned five suspects before a Special Court sitting in Awka for various cases bordering on rape, sexual and child abuse-related offences.

One of the suspects is a middle-aged father who has been having affairs with his daughter, during which he inflicted her with a serious viral disease.

According to a press release issued by the Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, on Wednesday, the suspects were brought before the court after the conclusion of investigations by the operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Ikenga said the suspects committed the offence at different locations across the state, adding that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, had described the case as heinous and unacceptable, reiterating the Command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, especially children, and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice

The statement read, “Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department have concluded investigations into several serious cases of sexual and child abuse-related offences, including that of a father who has been having an affair with his daughter and inflicted her with a serious viral disease.

“The five suspects will be arraigned today, May 6, 2026, before the Special Court sitting in Awka. Below are the details of the case.

“The Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department on April 22, 2026, received a case of defilement of a 16-year-old girl from Ogbunike Police Division Headquarters.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect, Chukwuemeka Chidiebere, male, aged 26 years, a security personnel at the estate in the area, allegedly attacked the victim while she was on her way to visit a friend within the estate.

“He was said to have dragged her into an uncompleted building within the estate where he forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. Meanwhile, the suspect has made a confessional statement.”

Ikenga added that the operatives also received on April 23, 2026, a case of defilement of an 11-year-old girl, transferred from Neni Police Divisional Headquarters.

“The male suspect, Uchenna Muojama, aged 36 years, allegedly lured the victim inside his barbing saloon where he forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The Operatives have further obtained a medical report for the court proceedings,” he added.

In a similar development, on April 21, 2025, a case of defilement was transferred from Central Police Station Awka, where a 52-year-old male suspect, Chukwudi Nwayata, took advantage of the mental situation of an 11-year-old girl, lured her to his house and forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim.

“Furthermore, on the same day, April 23, 2026, a case of incest involving a 20-year-old victim was transferred from Oko Police Station.

“The suspect, Rapuruchukwu Ezenandu, male, aged 46 years, allegedly engaged in sexual relations with the victim since she was 17 years old. The case came to light after the victim tested HIV positive during a hospital visit. The suspect has made a confessional statement.

In another development, on 28th April 2026, a female suspect by name Eucharia Ezenwanne allegedly subjected two children, Echetuna Ezenwanne (six years) and Chikaima Ezenwanne (four years), to severe physical abuse, reportedly using a wire to inflict injuries.

“The suspect claimed to have adopted the children from a motherless babies’ home in Onitsha.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Ikioye Orutugu, describing the case as heinous and unacceptable, reiterates the Command’s Commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, especially children, and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice,” the statement concluded.
