Ogun extends demolition deadline as Daniel gets court injunction

The Ogun State Government on Wednesday extended the deadline for property owners/occupiers affected by the ongoing audit exercises to submit their title documents by two weeks.

Among the affected is a former governor of the state and serving senator, Gbenga Daniel, whose residential house in Sagamu and hotels have been marked for demolition.

The deadline extension was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odunlami.

Odunlami said the extension was aimed at giving property owners and developers more time to either present their planning permits or approach the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and its agencies to regularise their unapproved developments.

This extension demonstrates the goodwill of the state government in response to representations made by a cross-section of the affected property owners both in Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode and reflects its commitment to the rule of law and transparency,” he said. “The government emphasises that this magnanimity does not derogate whatsoever from its constitutional and statutory actions already carried out on the matter.”

Odunlami insisted that the exercise was not “a witch-hunt of any individual or organisation, but a continuous effort towards ensuring sustainable urban development across the state.”

The deadline extension came on the heels of Tuesday’s ex parte order obtained by Daniel, restraining the state government “from tampering with or demolishing” his Asoludero Court, Sagamu GRA private residence, as well as his Conference Hotels Limited and its annex.

The restraining order was granted by Justice O.S. Oloyede after a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, A. M. Kotoye, representing Daniel and his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, moved the ex parte application before him on Tuesday

Listed as defendants were Ogun State  Governor, Dapo Abiodun, the state’s Attorney General, and the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit and the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The judge, in the  Certified True Cop held,  “Having read the affidavit in support and the affidavit of urgency, I am satisfied that this honourable court needed to take immediate steps to intervene in this case.

“Consequently, I hereby issue an exparte interim order of this honourable court restraining the defendants/respondents and their agents, allies, proxies, assigns, cronies, servants, etc and any other person(s), howsoever described, either claiming through them or acting on their behalf, in whatsoever as manner, upon their authority/ instructions, from demolishing or in any way or manner tampering with the property known as Asoludero Court, situate, lying and being at Block 1, Plots 7 and 8 and of Block XXXVIII, Plot 1 and 12, within the amended part of the Government Reservation Area, Sagamu, now known Awolowo Avenue, Sagamu, measuring approximately, 1,659 hectares, more particularly plan No. SA. 160 (OG) attached to the old Certificate of Occupancy No. 024698 dated the 21st April, 2005, later replaced by a new computerised Certificate of Occupancy No. LUD3/LR2693 dated 20th January, giving 2010 and/or to the effect Defendants/Respondents’ Quit Notice dated 8th August, 2025, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice herein filed.”

The judge also restrained the defendants and their agents “from further trespassing or in any way disturbing the claimants/applicants, from enjoying the quiet possession of the property.”

He subsequently adjourned till August 19 for further hearing in the matter.

Daniel had on Saturday accused Governor Abiodun of ordering the demolition of his Sagamu private residence, The Asoludero Court, Conference Hotels Limited, as well as the hotel annexe in Sagamu, all owned by the former governor

The former governor, in a statement signed by his media aide, Oliyide, described the move as an illegality and a political vendetta
