NYSC member stabs father to death in Abuja

A 53-year-old businessman, Mr. Adimike Godwin, has allegedly been killed by his son, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Friday night following a heated argument at their home in the Guzape area of Abuja

A source, who is an executive member of the Electrical Dealers Association of Nigeria (EDAN), described the deceased as a prominent electrical dealer and respected union member.

The source told Vanguard that Godwin owned houses in Lekki, Lagos, and in Guzape and Maitama, Abuja, frequently traveling between the cities for his business interests. He explained that the news of the incident reached the union after reports emerged that the businessman was allegedly stabbed three times by his son, who had returned from a club before the confrontation.

The source said: “We received news that one of our members, one of the big boys in the market, was involved in a tragic incident. He is an importer, a major dealer, and also involved in real estate.

He travelled to Abuja to see his first son, who is serving there for his youth service and also manages some of his father’s real estate business. Godwin shuttles between Abuja and Lagos because of his business.

“We were told that his son, who is also reportedly into drugs, went to a club and later returned to his Guzape home, one of the estates he manages for his father. Apparently, a heated argument ensued after the son confronted his father about being unfair with money, citing how some of his friends’ fathers, who are not as wealthy, buy cars for their children. Following the confrontation and an argument over mismanagement of business funds, the son allegedly stabbed his father three times in different parts of the body as seen in the body of the deceased. The boy is currently in Police custody in Abuja, and the wife of the deceased has also been invited for questioning.

As a union, our immediate action was to secure all his shops and warehouses to prevent anyone, including apprentices, from carting away goods. That is our normal procedure whenever such a tragedy happens to one of our members.

“We both belong to the Electrical Dealers Association of Nigeria (EDAN), and we are trying to get to the root of the matter. Some people have already visited his house, and the situation is very tragic

When Vanguard contacted the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, she confirmed that the incident came to light after concerned persons raised the alarm over their inability to reach or access the deceased.

She said: “The FCT Police Command is investigating the death of Mr. Adimike Godwin of Guzape, which was discovered following a distress call. “On arrival, the police found the injured victim in a pool of his own blood. He was confirmed dead by doctors on duty at Karu General Hospital. The police have taken five suspects, including a relative, into custody as part of a discreet investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD., FCAI. “Members of the public are urged to remain calm and report any relevant information to the command.”
