Military arrests suicide bomber, recovers 189 AK-47 rifles

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have recorded a major security success in Borno State, arresting a suspected suicide bomber and intercepting materials intended for the manufacture of Improvised Explosive Devices.

The suspect, identified as Abubakar Mustapha, was apprehended on Monday by personnel of the 152 Task Force Battalion, in collaboration with other security agencies, at Banki town in Bama Local Government Area.

The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North-East, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed that Mustapha was found in possession of primed IED components, indicating an imminent intent to carry out an attack.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect hails from Bama Local Government Area and was further discovered to be in possession of additional incriminating materials linked to terrorist activities. He is currently undergoing detailed interrogation to establish his sponsors, collaborators, and possible links with terrorist networks operating within the area,” Sani said.

In a related development, troops deployed at the Cameroon–Nigeria border intercepted a Peugeot vehicle carrying six bags of urea fertiliser, a critical precursor for IED production.

Further intelligence operations led to the arrest of the fertiliser dealer and the recovery of an additional six bags, bringing the total seizure to twelve bags.

“Both the vehicle and the fertiliser were immediately taken into military custody. All suspects and recovered items are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action,” Sani added.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to securing the North-East, stressing that troops would continue to deny terrorists freedom of movement.

“Troops of JTF NE OPHK continue to dominate their areas of responsibility through aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations, and sustained presence, in order to deny JAS/ISWAP terrorists freedom of action and prevent attacks on civilian populations and critical infrastructure,” he said.

In the North-West, the Nigerian Army also reported substantial operational achievements under Operation Fasanyama.

The 8 Division, Sector 2 disclosed that troops had recovered 189 AK-47 rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and other criminal assets, while rescuing 1,023 kidnapped victims during sustained operations across Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara States.

Speaking at the 2025 Combined West African Social Activities at the Division’s headquarters, the General Officer Commanding  8 Division said the operations neutralised several bandit leaders, destroyed terrorist camps, and led to a marked reduction in attacks.

 “These operations have restored confidence among communities and boosted economic activities, as farmers and traders now access areas previously considered unsafe,” the GOC said.

The GOC added that the division had strengthened its operational capacity by creating special task units capable of precision strike-and-destroy missions.

Troop welfare and infrastructure also received priority attention, with upgrades to medical facilities, engagement of additional health personnel, and renovation of accommodation blocks.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to consolidating gains recorded and transforming our forces into a professional, combat-ready, and resilient force. Personnel are urged to remain disciplined, vigilant, and security-conscious,” he said.

The WASA event, a long-standing tradition since 1901 to promote unity and cultural integration among West African soldiers, was attended by the Sokoto State Governor’s representative,  Col. Ahmed Abdoul (retd.), the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, and other traditional leaders.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command reported apprehending 3,081 suspects for major crimes between January and December 30, 2025. Police Commissioner Ibrahim Adamu Bakori disclosed that these arrests spanned 78 Police Divisions, 11 Area Commands, and 7 Tactical Units, and included:
