Lagos warns against unauthorised vehicle stickers

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has warned members of transport unions and their affiliates to desist from using unauthorised stickers as vehicle registration identifiers across the state.
This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.
In the statement, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the practice as illegal, saying it posed serious security risks and undermined the integrity of the government’s vehicular registration system.
He said only constitutionally recognised agencies were empowered to register vehicles in Lagos, adding that the use of “union stickers” instead of proper registration was a gross violation of existing laws.
Bakare-Oki said, “Any vehicle discovered navigating the roadways under the guise of ‘Union Sticker’ identifiers, or other unauthorised symbols, shall be summarily impounded, and the culpable parties shall face full sanctions under the provisions of the law.”
He explained that the proliferation of such identifiers could compromise law enforcement efforts and endanger public safety.
The LASTMA boss disclosed that the agency would step up surveillance in collaboration with security operatives and other relevant enforcement bodies to ensure compliance.
While appealing to unions to respect traffic laws, Bakare-Oki stressed that proper registration was not just about administrative order but also about safeguarding the collective security and well-being of Lagos residents.
