Lagos taskforce arrests 52 suspects in Island clean-up operation

The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce has arrested 52 suspects during a late-night clean-up operation aimed at ridding Lagos Island of criminal elements.

The Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday via X.

According to Wahab, the taskforce commenced its enforcement operation at about 12:35 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, covering key areas such as Lekki, Ikoyi, Falomo Bridge, Eko Hotel, and Ligali Ayorinde.

Complaints and distressed calls suggest that some of these streets are populated at night by unscrupulous elements—miscreants, street urchins, pickpockets, and other suspected criminals—denying innocent Lagosians of their hard-earned valuables and belongings,” Wahab stated.

He explained that during the raid, 52 suspects were apprehended, comprising 51 males and one female. He noted that sanity was restored in all the areas visited during the operation.

“The operation today on the Island was part of a series of enforcement and clean-up exercises slated for at least twice a week to gradually rid the area of criminal elements,” the commissioner added.

Wahab assured that all arrested suspects would be charged in court accordingly as part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safer Lagos.
