Lagos NBA probes AfriLand Towers fire

The Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, has set up an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the fire outbreak that ravaged AfriLand Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on September 16, 2025.

The tragic incident claimed several lives, including that of Mrs Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke, a member of the association.

In a statement signed by the Branch Chairman, Mrs Uchenna Ogunedo-Akingbade, the NBA described the move as part of its mandate to uphold the rule of law and protect fundamental human rights.

“The panel will probe the circumstances surrounding the fire, assess compliance with safety standards, and make recommendations to prevent future occurrences,” the statement read.

The panel is chaired by Nonso Azih, with Vivian Okoh-Olutunfese serving as the Alternate Chair and Dan Whisky as Secretary.

Other members include Theophilus Alao, Maduka Onwukeme, and Fola Akintunde.

According to Akingbade, the Lagos Branch cupped from much expects the panel’s findings and recommendations to help promote accountability and improve public safety. “We look forward to their findings and recommendations,” she said.
