Group demands justice for slain policeman

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure justice in the tragic killing of a police Inspector, Shedrack Amechi, by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Ebonyi State.
Amechi was allegedly shot and killed on August 27, 2025, at Amaeze, Ishiagu, in the Ivo Local Government Area, while on duty to arrest a suspect reportedly shielded by NSCDC operatives.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma, on Saturday, the organisation condemned what it described as an avoidable inter-agency hostility and misuse of firearms.
Nwanguma warned that such incidents “not only erode public confidence in law enforcement but also pose a direct threat to national security.”
He said, “According to the Ebonyi State Police Command, the matter has been transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja. This transfer must not result in delays or a cover-up. Instead, it must lead to a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation that delivers justice for the late officer and his family.”
Accounts indicate that the NSCDC team, allegedly acting on instructions from a superior officer, obstructed the arrest and, in the confrontation that followed, one operative discharged his rifle, fatally wounding Inspector Amechi.
“The petition addressed to the IGP reads in part: Ensure a prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation into the circumstances of Inspector Amechi’s death, including the roles of NSCDC operatives and their superiors.”
Nwanguma also urged the police to demonstrate accountability “by bringing all those responsible—whether directly or through command responsibility—to justice, to deter future inter-agency conflicts and impunity.
“Provide adequate redress and compensation for the Amechi family, recognising the hardship caused by the loss of their breadwinner. Offer institutional assurance to serving police officers that their families will not be abandoned if they lose their lives in the line of duty. This assurance is essential for sustaining morale and dedication within the police force.”
