Gridlock leaves commuters stranded on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

Traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has been at a standstill since the early hours of Saturday, leaving commuters stranded.
The congestion is being fueled by a surge in vehicular movement linked to the 73rd Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), currently taking place at Redemption City, Kilometer 46 along the highway.
Motorists report spending over five hours covering short distances, with some abandoning travel plans completely.
Public transport operators have reportedly hiked fares, taking advantage of the crisis.
Authorities are advising travellers to seek alternative routes, while traffic management teams battle to ease the flow.
The RCCG convention, themed “The Overcomers”, runs from August 4–10 and has drawn worshippers from across Nigeria and beyond.
Our correspondent reports that many of the worshippers and people going about the day job result to trekking with multiple reports saying that no end in sight.
The gridlock went beyond the RCCG Camp gate inward Lagos – affecting few bus stops before it- OPIC, Mowe, Lotto, Pakuro, NASFAT, Asese, Ibafo and way beyond.
As of press time, movement remains slow on both lanes and there is no official estimate for when normal traffic will resume.
