Four vehicles, container burnt as fire guts mechanic workshop in Oyo

A devastating fire destroyed four vehicles and a container at a mechanic workshop on Togunde Street, Akingbade area, along Old Ife Road in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, in Ibadan, the state capital, on Sunday, said the incident occurred at exactly 9:16 p.m. on Saturday.

Akinwande, who also serves as the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, attributed the cause of the fire to sparks from an engine compartment.

He explained that no life was lost, but four vehicles and one container were destroyed in the fire.

The statement read, “The Oyo State Fire Services Agency attended to a fire incident at a mechanic workshop on Togunde Street, Akingbade area, Old Ife Road, Gbagi, Ibadan.

“At exactly 21:16hrs on Saturday, June 13, 2026, we received a distress call from Mr Damola reporting a mechanic workshop on fire at the above address.

“Fire personnel, led by CFS Adekola, promptly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a container and four vehicles at the mechanic workshop had been engulfed by fire, with thick smoke billowing from the affected vehicles and container.

The fire was swiftly contained by personnel of the state Fire Service, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties. Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by sparks from an engine compartment, which ignited combustible materials.

“No casualty was recorded. The firefighting operation was jointly carried out with the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command.”

Akinwande urged members of the public to remain conscious of fire safety at all times.

He also stressed the importance of installing fire extinguishers in workshops and vehicles to help contain fire incidents at an early stage.

Online reports that a fire outbreak destroyed 14 shops at Ogundipe Market in Ibadan North Local Government Area of the state in September 2025.

Also, in the same local government area in December 2025, a devastating fire destroyed eight shops near the Sango Police Divisional Headquarters, Sango.

An eyewitness, identified as Bukola Ogundeji, said, “I am not a shop owner there. I only came for a visit, but the incident started around 12:30 p.m. We are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire.”
