Five Nigerian artists to showcase works at Budapest art market

Five Nigerian contemporary artists are set to showcase their works at the Art Market Budapest, an international contemporary art fair in Hungary.

The artists; Albert Ohams, Nurudeen Odeniyi, Ajibo Ikechukwu, Opara Onyekachi and Bali Audu, will feature in an exhibition titled Beyond Borders, organised by NK Art Space in collaboration with The Brush Cartoon and Animation Centre Ltd.

In a statement issued by the Chief Executive Officer of NK Art Space, Nancy Keshinro on Friday, the exhibition will explore themes including “identity, heritage, memory, culture and contemporary African experiences.”

Keshinro said the presentation would feature works across painting, mixed media and contemporary visual practices, with the artists drawing on cultural references, personal experiences and social realities.

She said the exhibition would not seek to present “a singular definition of African art,” but would instead bring together different interpretations of African experiences through the artists’ works.

According to the statement, the works examine how African stories are “seen, remembered and reimagined,” while exploring the relationship between tradition and contemporary life, as well as personal and collective memory.

The statement said the exhibition was organised to connect the artists with audiences beyond Africa and would present their works at the Budapest art market.

The five artists will join other exhibitors at the contemporary art fair, where their works will be presented under the Beyond Borders exhibition.
