Firm educates Lagos students on waste management

An hospitality and agribusiness company, Transnational Corporation Plc has launched a recycling initiative at Ireti Grammar School, Ikoyi, Lagos, as part of efforts to promote environmental responsibility among secondary school students.

The company also donated colour-coded waste bins to the school and others within its host communities to encourage proper waste sorting and disposal.

Speaking at the event, Transcorp’s President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Owen Omogiafo, said the project was designed to educate young Nigerians on the impact of poor waste management and the economic potential of recycling.

“We are doing this because we have a duty to the environment. Recycling is not just about cleanliness. It can generate income. People buy plastic bottles and metal scraps, this is a way to empower yourselves while protecting your surroundings,” Omogiafo said.

She criticised indiscriminate dumping of waste, especially into drainage channels, saying it worsens flooding and damages public infrastructure.

The Principal of Ireti Senior Grammar School, Okuyemi Babafemi, described the intervention as timely. She said it would help students understand the importance of managing plastic waste, particularly PET bottles, and the consequences of poor waste habits.

The initiative is part of Transcorp’s sustainability agenda focused on education, environment and economic empowerment in communities where it operates.
