FG supports Osun hospitals with oxygen plants
The Federal Government has installed Oxygen Pressure Swing Adsorption plants in two Osun State government-owned hospitals in Osogbo and Iwo as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s oxygen ecosystem.
The government also donated medical equipment to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, and the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ila Orangun.
The disclosure was made on Thursday by the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr. Temitope Ilori, during the inauguration of the Global Fund-Supported Oxygen and Health Products Investments at the Osun Government Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo.
Ilori said the donation was part of a global fund-supported initiative to enable the state to provide affordable, accessible, dependable, and equitable medical-grade oxygen therapy services.
According to her, the items donated by the Federal Government through NACA to the Osun State Hospitals Management Board include “seven flow splitters, 30 oxygen regulators, 100 oxygen flow meters, 100 humidifiers, 33 nasal cannulas (paediatric), 16 nasal cannulas (neonates), and 345 nasal cannulas (adult).”
On donations to federal teaching hospitals in the state, Ilori said:“At the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ila Orangun: 50 large oxygen cylinders, 70 small oxygen cylinders, 12 hand-held pulse oximeters, 90 large oxygen cylinders, 135 small oxygen cylinders, 4 table-top pulse oximeters, 72 hand-held pulse oximeters, 30 oxygen concentrators, 30 UPS for oxygen concentrators, 30 oxygen analyzers were donated.
“At OAUTHC: one oxygen regulator, one max O2 ME oxygen analyzer, 30 foam packings, 20 adult finger sensor/patient monitors, 20 paediatric finger sensor patient monitors, 15 multi-reusable pulse monitors, 20 hand-held pulse oximeters, two oxygen sensors, and 15 rainbow sets were donated.”
She further highlighted other interventions by NACA to ensure quality and affordable oxygen across the country.
She said,“Twelve cryogenic/liquid oxygen tanks of 10,000 litres each were procured and installed for the storage of medical-grade LOX in selected federal tertiary hospitals across the six geopolitical zones.
“Two of these tanks have been installed at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, and University College Hospital, Ibadan. They are currently awaiting flushing and filling with medical-grade liquid oxygen to ensure accessibility, availability, affordability, quality, and safe use.”
During a press briefing in Abuja ahead of World AIDS Day, Ilori also noted that Nigeria had met two of the three 2030 global HIV targets, reflecting significant progress in HIV prevention, testing, and treatment.
