Farewell to a legend: Nigeria mourns Namibia’s founding father, Sam Nujoma

The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Namibia, the Nujoma family, and the entire Southern African region following the passing of Dr. Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s founding President and a revered figure in Africa’s liberation struggle.
Dr. Nujoma, who led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first President for 15 years, reportedly passed away peacefully on Saturday night in Windhoek, the nation’s capital.
Describing him as a visionary leader and Pan-Africanist, Nigeria, in a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday, acknowledged his tireless efforts in championing justice, equality, and self-determination.
Onanuga said his leadership not only shaped Namibia’s destiny but also inspired generations across Africa in the fight against oppression and injustice.
As Namibia’s pioneer President, Onanuga said Dr. Nujoma laid the foundation for democracy, reconciliation, and national development, earning global recognition for his contributions to peace and progress.
“In this time of mourning, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Namibia and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and partnership between our two nations,” said Onanuga added.
Nigeria joins the world in honouring Dr. Nujoma’s enduring legacy and prays for his soul to rest in eternal peace.
